An Evening With Rich Teerlink, Former CEO of Harley Davidson, on the Role of Independent Directors in Family Business

Rich's efforts at Harley Davidson resulted in increasing US market share from 15% to 50%, which led to Entrepreneur Magazine listing him as one of 10 Inspirational Leaders Who Turned Around Their Companies.

As a recently retired board member at Vertex, Inc., a tax software company and longtime member of DVFBC, Rich will be on a panel to discuss how having a board with outside directors has helped grow their business and strengthen family relationships.

The other panel members will include Jeff Westphal, Second Generation CEO at Vertex, Inc., Stefanie Westphal Lucas, Board Chair of Vertex, Inc., and David DeStefano, Executive Vice President, Vertex, Inc.

Sept 21 Panel Updated

Jeff reflects, “Stefanie, Amanda and I agree that the best thing we ever did was bring true independent directors onto our Board.  They have been instrumental in helping us professionalize our interactions at the Board level and thrive over the last 13 years as both a business and a family".

Independent directors aren’t right for everyone but Jeff’s sentiments echo what we hear from many of our members and clients: that independent directors can add much-needed experience, objectivity, accountability, and results into a family business.
