Having grown up in a successful business family, Steve brings a lifetime (over 45 years) of learning and firsthand experience in navigating family business complexities, including a long-term partnership with his father and two brothers. His and his family’s commitment to learning is reflected in their long-term membership in DVFBC’s Learning Community.
Steve brings a whole-hearted spirit, deep managerial experience, and ownership wisdom to business families as they journey through the natural relational, emotional, and organizational transitions. We are very pleased to have Steve work with us while he continues as the 3rd generation President of Essig Plumbing and Heating, Reading, PA, where he leads a strong, growing team of 45 associates with sales over $12M. We appreciate his eagerness to “give back” to other family businesses and welcome Steve as the first alumnus in our 32 year history to join our staff.
Steve followed the best practice of gaining strong “outside experience.” After graduating from Penn State in Ag Business Management, he worked in the agricultural industry followed by two years in the family business. He then responded to a call to pastoral ministry by completing seminary and serving as a pastor for 20 years focusing on small group development, leadership, and counseling—while still always contributing part-time to the business.
Steve knows the value of accountable peer groups for his own personal and professional development and success of his family business. He has been a long-time member and currently serves as a member-to-member coach in Nexstar, the premier best practice association in his industry. Steve also serves on the Berks County Family Business Advisory Council and has been one of their Peer Group facilitators.
Steve and his wife Teri have been married for 32 years, live on a small sheep farm, and are blessed with four adult children and one granddaughter.
