When enterprising families engage with us, they’re naturally focused on visible challenges.
A leadership transition. A succession plan. A family meeting that isn’t going well. Questions about ownership, board development, or the future of the business.
These are important issues and they deserve attention.
After nearly four decades of walking alongside enterprising families, we’ve learned that lasting progress rarely begins with organizational charts, legal documents, or strategic plans.
It begins with people, trust, and relationships.
The most important work is often the work no one sees.
Every enterprising family encounters ongoing transitions. As families grow and enterprises become more complex, new questions emerge about leadership, ownership, communication, decision-making, and legacy.
These transitions often create uncertainty and anxiety. Family members may have different hopes for the future, assumptions about their roles, or perspectives on what success should look like.
The temptation is to rush toward solutions.
We believe better solutions with family business complexity start with understanding and education.
That’s why our engagements begin with our BaseCamp Discovery process.
BaseCamp is designed to help the family engage in necessary, awkward conversations and help us, as advisors and coaches, understand the family business system before recommending optimal paths forward.
Through questionnaires, individual conversations, meetings with key stakeholders, and facilitated family discussions, we create safe spaces for every voice to be heard. We explore each person’s hopes, concerns, questions, challenges, and vision for the future as well as perspectives on what’s working and not working in the business. And we provide education, tried and true principles, and family business practices.
This process often uncovers insights that would never emerge in a group meeting alone. Insights like:
By slowing down and listening carefully, we begin building one of the most important ingredients for long-term success: trust.
One of our core beliefs is that strong teams are composed of healthy, growing people.
Whether in the Family, Management, Board, Shareholder, or Advisor MOUNTAIN (see our 5 MOUNTAIN® Model above), the effectiveness of every team is influenced by the emotional maturity, self-awareness, and resilience of its members.
This is why coaching is such an important part of our work.
Coaching helps individuals develop a stronger sense of self. It encourages clear thinking, self-responsibility, healthy communication, and the courage to engage in difficult conversations. It helps people understand their own patterns, assumptions, and reactions so they can show up more effectively in relationships and leadership roles.
As individuals grow, families grow.
As families grow, enterprises become stronger.
DVFBC advises enterprising families on developing the communication skills, decision-making processes, relational strength, and shared understanding needed to navigate whatever challenges and opportunities the future may bring.
This work is often invisible. It doesn’t make headlines. It doesn’t always appear in meeting notes or strategic plans.
Yet it is frequently the difference between families that merely survive transitions and families that flourish across generations.
We delight in guiding enterprising families to build the clarity, alignment, and capacity required for generations of success.
You climb. We guide.
